New era of travel in Railways with Smart Coaches

Indian Railways start to run Rajdhani Express with Upgraded Tejas Coaches equipped with intelligent sensor-based systems. The new train will have special smart features for enhanced passenger safety and comfort. With the use of Tejas SMART Coach, Indian Railways aims to move to predictive maintenance instead of preventive maintenance. Paradigm shift by Indian Railways for enhancing the travel experience for the passengers.

A new era of train travel experience with enhanced comfort is being rolled out in Indian Railways with the introduction of newly upgraded Tejas sleeper coach rakes in Western Railways. These bright golden hued coaches, with enhanced smart features are being introduced to run Railway’s prestigious Mumbai Rajdhani Express train offer best in class travel experience. This new rake made its maiden run from Monday, 19th July, 2021.  The existing rakes of Train No.  02951/52 Mumbai – New Delhi Rajdhani Special Express, one of the most prestigious & premium trains of WR have been replaced with brand new Tejas type sleeper coaches. Two such Tejas type sleeper coach rakes have been made ready to run as Rajdhani Express. Out of these two rakes, one rake comprises of exclusive Tejas Smart sleeper coaches, which is first of its kind to be introduced over Indian Railways.

The new train will have special smart features for enhanced passenger safety and comfort. The smart coach aims to provide world-class facilities to passengers with the help of intelligent sensor-based systems.

It is equipped with Passenger Information and Coach Computing Unit (PICCU) provided with GSM network connectivity, which reports to the remote server. PICCU will record the data of WSP, CCTV recording, Toilet odour sensors, panic switch and other items integrated with fire detection and alarm system, air quality and choke filter sensor & energy meter. 

With the use of Tejas SMART Coach, Indian Railways aims to move to predictive maintenance instead of preventive maintenance. The introduction of this modern Tejas Sleeper type train for long distance journey, is another paradigm shift by Indian Railways for enhancing the travel experience for the passengers.

Additional Smart Features:

●          PA/PIS (Passenger Announcement/Passenger Information System): Two LCDs inside each coach display vital journey related information to the passengers such as the next station, distance remaining, expected time of arrival, delay and safety related messages.

●          Digital destination board: Flush type LED Digital Destination Board has been installed on each coach by splitting the displayed data into two rows. The first row displays Train number and Coach type while second row displays scrolling text of destination and intermediate station in multiple languages.

●          Security & Surveillance monitoring: Six nos. of cameras are fitted in each coach which gives live recording. CCTV cameras with day night vision capability, Facial recognition even in low light condition, Network Video Recorder are provided.

●          Automatic Plug Door: All main entrance doors are centralized controlled by Guard. Train will not start until all doors are closed.

●          Fire Alarm, Detection and Suppression system: All coaches are provided with Automatic Fire Alarm and Detection System. The Pantry and Power Cars have automatic fire suppression system in case detected.

●          Emergency Talk back for medical or security emergency

●          Improved Toilet Unit: Provided with anti-graffiti coating, Gel coated shelf, New design dustbin, Door latch activated light, Engagement display.

●          Toilet Occupancy Sensor: Automatically displays the toilet occupancy inside each coach

●          Panic Button in Lavatories: Fitted in each lavatory, in case of any emergency.

●          Toilet Annunciation Sensor Integration (TASI): Two nos. of Toilet Annunciation Sensor Integration are fitted in each coach which will relay dos and don’ts announcement in the lavatories, whenever it is engaged.

●          Bio-Vacuum Toilet system:  Provides improved hygiene condition in the toilet due to improved flushing and also save water per flush.

●          Stainless Steel Under-frame:  Complete under-frame is of austenitic stainless steel (SS 201LN) which increases life of the coach because of reduced corrosion.

●          Air Suspension Bogies: Provided with Air Spring Suspension in bogies to improve passenger comfort and ride quality of these coaches.

●          On Board condition monitoring system for Bearing, Wheel, to improve safety

●          HVAC - Air quality measurement for Air Conditioning system

●          Water level sensor to indicate water availability on real time basis

●          Textured Exterior PVC Film:  Exterior is provided with textured PVC film.

●          Improved interiors: Seats and berths having fire – resistant silicon foam, provide better comfort and safety to passengers.

●          Roller Blind on window:  Instead of curtains roller blinds provided for easy sanitization.

●          Mobile Charging points: Provided for each passenger.

●          Berth reading light: Provided for each passenger.

●          Upper berth climbing arrangement: Convenient upper berth arrangement.

Tejas type Sleeper coaches are manufactured at Modern Coach Factory (MCF) which will gradually replace the premium long-distance trains over Indian Railways network.

Railway: Previous system again?

Indian Railways has decided to restore earlier system of preparation of second reservation charts w.e.f. 10.10.2020.

As per established pre COVID period instructions, the first reservation chart was prepared at least 4 hours before scheduled departure of train. Thereafter, the available accommodation could be booked across PRS counters as well as through internet on first-come-first-serve basis till preparation of second reservation charts.

Second reservation charts were prepared between 30 minutes to 5 minutes before scheduled/rescheduled time of departure of trains. Cancellation of already booked tickets was also permitted during this period as per provisions of Refund Rules.

Due to pandemic, instructions were issued to shift the time of preparation of second reservation chart to 2 hours before scheduled/ rescheduled time of departure of trains.

As per request of Zonal Railways for ensuring convenience of rail passengers, the matter has been examined and it has been decided that the second reservation chart shall be prepared at least 30 minutes before scheduled/rescheduled time of departure of train.

Accordingly, ticket booking facility, both online and on PRS ticket counters, shall be available, before preparation of second chart.

CRIS has been issued necessary modifications in the software accordingly so as to restore this provision w.e.f. 10.10.2020.

100% Electrification of Broad Gauge Routes of Indian Railways

*CCEA has approved electrification of remaining unelectrified broad gauge (BG) routes of Indian Railways

*Upon completion of electrification of the proposed routes, Indian Railways broad gauge network will be 100% operational on electric traction

*Significant benefits in the areas of Safety, Capacity, Speed, Energy Security & Sustainability


*Proposed electrification is mainly for missing links and last mile connectivity and will increase the operational efficiency, enhance the line capacity and improve the average speed of trains

*Post electrification, Indian Railways is likely to save Rs 13,510 crore per annum in fuel bill

*Will generate direct employment of about 20.4 crore man days during the period of construction.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal for electrification of balance un-electrified BG routes of Indian Railways (IR) comprising of 108 sections covering 13,675 route kilometers (16,540 track kilometers) at a cost of Rs.12,134.50 crore. This electrification is likely to be completed by 2021-22.

The major trunk routes on IR network have already been electrified and are operational. Considering the requirement for seamless operation of rail traffic across the network, it is necessary that the bottlenecks created by the need to change traction are done away with. The proposed electrification, which is mainly for missing links and last mile connectivity will increase the operational efficiency, enhance the line capacity and improve the average speed of trains.

The approved electrification will reduce the use of imported fossil fuels thereby improve energy security to the Nation. After the planned electrification, there would be reduction in the consumption of high speed diesel oil by about 2.83 billion litres per annum and a reduction in GHG emissions. This will also reduce environmental impact of Railways.

Currently, around two thirds of freight and more than half of passenger traffic in Indian Railways moves on electric traction. However, electric traction accounts for just 37% of the total energy expenses of Indian Railways. Due to this advantage, post electrification, Indian Railways is likely to save Rs 13,510 crore per annum in fuel bill and the same will improve its finances.

The approved electrification will generate direct employment of about 20.4 crore man days during the period of construction.

The benefits from this decision are listed below:

Capacity & Speed

100% electrification will provide seamless train operation by eliminating detention of trains due to change in traction from diesel to electric and vice versa.

It will help Railways in enhancing line capacity due to higher speed & higher haulage capacity of electric locomotives

Safety

Improved signalling system will lead to enhanced safety in train operation

Energy Security

In line with the new Auto Fuel Policy of the Government, total shift to electric traction will reduce fossil fuel consumption of about 2.83 billion liters per annum

Reduced dependence on imported petroleum based fuels will ensure energy security to the nation

Energy bill savings

Overall savings in fuel bill to the extent of Rs. 13,510 cr per annum. Electrification of sections covered under this decision will result in net savings of Rs. 3,793 cr per annum

Reduced expenditure on maintenance of locomotive as electric locomotive  maintenance cost is Rs. 16.45 per thousand GTKM compared to diesel locomotive  maintenance cost which is Rs. 32.84 per thousand GTKM

Regeneration facility of electric locomotives will save 15-20% energy

Reduced overall requirement of electric loco due to higher horse power

Sustainability

Reduced carbon footprint as environmental cost per Tonne Km for Electric Traction is 1.5 Paisa and for Diesel Traction 5.1 paisa

In line with commitment made by India in COP21, total shift to electric traction will reduce CO2 emission of Railways by 24% till 2027-28

Green house gas emission for electric traction will fall below diesel traction by 2019-20 making it environmentally friendly option.

Employment Generation

Direct employment during construction phase for about 20.4 crore Man days.

 The complete electrification of railway is poised to continue the growth story of Indian Railways. Through the aforementioned benefits, complete electrification will act as a catalyst for the modernisation process and deliver greater economic benefits. It will help Indian Railways become the growth engine of India as envisaged by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
